Colorado’s SCORP Released today!

Big news! Today, Colorado Parks and Wildlife released the 2019-2023 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan that I wrote and helped edit. This was a HUGE project but I think it turned out great and look forward to seeing how the state will implement the recommendations.

Lasting Legacies story in USA Today’s Hunt & Fish

Lasting Legacies story in USA Today’s Hunt & Fish

I’m so excited about this new story that is in the 2018 Hunt & Fish magazine produced by USA Today. This was a very personal article for me to write, but I loved being able to tie in my family hunting story with the current efforts to recruit, retain and reactivate hunters. The story starts on page 51 of the magazine.

Change Your Range – Cleaning up Public Shooting Ranges

Change Your Range – Cleaning up Public Shooting Ranges

This story talks about the new organization Change Your Range that is working to clean up shooting areas on public lands and to build better ethics in recreational shooters. Many people target practice out on federal public lands – but too often they leave the shooting area full of trash. Change Your Range is hosting range cleanups and trying to start a social movement, #ChangeYourRange, to have people post pictures when they get out and clean up the ranges. The story even got tweeted out by Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke!

Next Gen Farmers in USA Today’s Department of Agriculture publication

Next Gen Farmers in USA Today’s Department of Agriculture publication

I had a great opportunity to shift gears a little in my freelancing writing by doing a story in USA Today’s Department of Agriculture publication about the next generation of farmers and ranchers. This story takes a look at the current trends in agriculture with less young people getting out on the land, describes how a number of young farmers and ranchers often have a new perspective on agriculture, and outlines some of the programs available for those interested in getting started. This was a lot of fun to research and write and reminds me of my own farming family back in New Jersey! The story was the cover and lead in the table of contents and runs from page 50-58.

PFC releases report on collaborative conservation

PFC releases report on collaborative conservation

Partners for Conservation released their “Lessons Learned from Collaborative Sage-Grouse Conservation” report today. PFC wanted to see if there were common themes about what worked and what didn’t in this big collaborative effort. The lessons learned will hopefully help set the stage for future collaborative conservation efforts. This was a big project – I conducted interviews with 40 different individuals from a wide variety of perspectives and at different scales within the sage-grouse conservation process, summarized the responses and coordinated design and publication of the final report.
